1.1 The background of the study
1.1.1 The importance of high school English written expression
高中英语书面表达的重要性
Written expression is a very important output skill, it can reflect the student’s ability of understanding.Axelrod,R.B & Cooper,C.R (1988:2-3) argued that “Writing also contributes uniquely to the way we learn.When we take notes during lectures or as we read, writing enables us to sort out the information and tohighlight what is important. Outlining or summarizing new information provides an overview of the subjectand also fosters close analysis of it. Thus, writing makes us more effective learners and critical thinkers”.Clark (1992), Mcdonough & Shaw (1993) said that “writing is an activity though which the writer thinks,expresses feelings, expresses his/her knowledge of the world, communicates his/her moods, achieveinterpersonal purposes”.Written expression also occupies a very important proportion of a variety of English exams in China;written expression scores will directly affect the students’ performance in English learning. For example,the total score of NMET (national matriculation English test) is 150 points, in which the written expressionscore is 30 points, taking 20 percentages of the total score.

1.1.2 The requirements of teaching high school English written expression in China
The High School English Curriculum Standards regulated that “the objectives of high school Englishcurriculum is based on the goal of compulsory education’s five grades, with a total of four-level (six to nine)objective requirements. And the seventh level is required to be met in senior school.” For the teaching of written expression skills, The High School English Curriculum Standards providesas follows: “Teaching purpose is to express facts, views, feelings, imagination, exchange information, and develop standardized writing habits. The basic skills that the students should learn are: organizing ideas andmaterials, planning essay structure, outlining, drafting, organizing language, and phrasing, revising andusing punctuation and letter case correctly. Material Selection should be at the same level with the students’abilities and close to the students’ lives, should have specific topics, should be purposeful, funny andauthentic. The role of teachers should be to guide, inspire, demonstrate, discuss, encourage and evaluate.”
According to High School English Curriculum Standards (Experimental), “High school studentsshould format their own learning strategies which suit their learning characteristics, and adjust theirlearning strategies constantly according to their needs. …In teaching process, the teacher should also…Enable students to format communication strategies in the process of participating in communicativeactivities by designing variety of internal and external learning activities.”The High School English Curriculum Standards provides that:Teachers should establish a standard of English teaching system and rich curriculum resource syste
