1.1 Research Background
Education, in its broadest, general sense is the means through which the aims and habits of a groupof people lives on from one generation to the next. Generally, it occurs through any experience that has aformative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts. In its narrow, technical sense, education is theformal process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills, customs, andvalues from one generation to another, e.g., instruction in schools。In school, however, education seems to lose part of its meaning now. Examination should have beenjust a tool to evaluate teaching and learning. However, because of the existence of the Exam-orientededucation and the impression of Chinese traditional education in China, the examinations seem to bemore important than anything else for students, especially the college entrance examinations. ChineseEnglish teachers try their best to teach well, only to help as many students as possible pass the collegeentrance examination, while whether the students mastering the language or not becomes no significant. What was worse, speaking ability is not evaluated in the college entrance examination. Because of this, one of the four basic skills, speaking often gets less attention than listening, reading, and writing, andeven ignored in English teaching. Therefore, although most senior high school students in Henanprovince have been learning English for more than five or six years, they still can not speak in Englishand can not communicate with the native speakers who are from English-speaking countries. What ismore, the teachers working in the front-line of educational circles only pay more attention to those whichare included in the examination, and they teach students English by using their mother tongue; theyspeak English little during a class. Therefore students often have few chances to listen to it, not tomention speaking English. Most students often have a small vocabulary and are unfamiliar with thefrequently-used words or phrases; they can not pronounce correctly. In reality, the ignored speakingability is the vital elements of communicative competence, while the final goal of language learning isthe acquisition of communicative competence. Therefore, in order to improve students’ oral Englishcompetence, it is of great importance to know about the students’ oral English’ current situation andproblems.
