Languagelearning theory also develops rapidly. Naturally, the English learners are considered as thefocus of researches. With the development of humanistic Psychology, the language learner’saffective factor ranks high. According to Krashen’s affective filter hypothesis, the affectivefactors include the learner’s motivation, self-confidence, attitude and anxiety states. In recentyears, the learner’s anxiety becomes a hot topic.In China, from the kindergarten to the senior middle school, approximately 271 millionstudents take English as their compulsory subject. Because of the limited capacity of theuniversities and the huge number students, examination for the entrance of the university isunavoidable. Therefore, the learning period of senior middle school is paid much moreattention, during which senior one plays an important role in a student’s final learning results.The students in senior one face a quantity of challenge: adapting to the new environment,overcoming learning anxiety, making the new learning goals and so on. During the first yearof senior middle school, learning anxiety is always regarded as the enemy. Of course, theEnglish learning anxiety could not be neglected.
The researches on the English learning anxiety of the students in senior one are not rarein recent years. However, English under-achievers, as a special group of students in seniorone are often ignored. According to some researches and investigations, nearly 20% of theschool population in the world is under-achievers. Meanwhile, it is also found that thenumber of under-achievers in senior middle school has been increasing year by year. These students are often considered as those who have no talent in learning and their confidence arealso ruined. However, many researches have shown that every normal child has potentials tobecome a capable person. The differences lie in their developing directions and speeds. As anew start, senior one provides the under-achievers with opportunities as well as challenges.The teachers’ proper instructions to the under-achievers could tap their potentials.Therefore, having an all-around understanding of them is the key to find the properinstructions.
