Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
As a new major, Business English lacks a perfect teaching syllabus; also thematerials cannot satisfy the needs of both students and teachers. Teachers need tochoose textbooks by themselves, and there is no unified standard for Reference. Someuniversities also followed the general old English professional textbooks whichfocused on general English abilities only, lacking practicability as well asmaneuverability and failing to combine them with the business courses. Many teachers of colleges and universities who graduated from normalUniversities were assigned to teach business English, without any experience ofworking in business enterprises. They have no idea about business requirements, andcannot instruct students properly. Therefore students have superficial knowledge oftheir future jobs, hardly able to meet the business requirements in their future jobs. Before setting up business English major, some colleges and universities blindlyfollowed the trend, without a comprehensive and detailed investigation of the jobmarket. The curriculum was a simple combination of subjects on business and English, which resulted in a disconnection between the campus knowledge they learned andemployment requirements. Therefore, employment is not satisfying.

1.2 Objectives of the Study
With these problems more and more prominent, the vocational reform in businessEnglish course is imminent. Firstly, the talents after our cultivation are expected toacquire a combination of English language and business skills, while the teaching islimited to focus on language skills and business theories. Secondly, there are fewpapers published for business English teaching in vocational college which may helpto bring a model, comparing with a large number of scholars who have shown greatenthusiasm in undergraduate BE program. Therefore, we need to do in-depthcomprehensive needs analysis before the reform of curriculum and teaching. Based onneeds analysis theory and by two surveys from sophomores, graduates, teachers andmanagers, this thesis tries to establish a set of business English Teaching Mode --Taking the employment as the guidance. The author has put forward some practice inthis thesis, including compilation of materials, orientation of training students, practical teaching methodology, optimizing course design, strengthening students’comprehensive abilities, and so on. After two years of trail, the author conducted asecond-round survey among graduates and enterprises. Comparing the data ofexperimental class and control class specifically, the author is glad to find thatstudents in the experimental class have more chances to use English in their workingsettings and more welcomed by enterprises than in the control class. Therefore, thestudy will help to provide favorable suggestions as well as useful information forbusiness English course designers and teachers. In addition, this thesis can be used asreference for future reform in business English of vocational college by formulatingteaching objectives and contents.
