Chapter One Literature Review

1.1 Development of BE and BE Teaching
BE。
The origin of BE is considered by scholars time and again, and it is anacknowledged fact that there are two key historical periods which give rise to theemergence and formation of BE (Li Qiang,2017:4). The first period dates back tothe end of the World War IL At that time, the United States was leading the wholeworld on all sides, especially, in the economic development. Undoubtedly,English,as a medium of communication, is recognized and adopted internationally for goodcooperation- Oil Crisis, marking the second period of BE formation, resulted inmovement of currency and professional knowledge into countries that are rich inoil. The crisis, in the meantime, made English a medium of internationalcommunication and transmission of knowledge in the early 1970s. With thedevelopment of international business and trade, BE comes into being, differingfrom General English (GE thereafter) for its cultural connotation and fixedexpressions in many ways. As a result, those who are engaged in business withforeign countries need to master BE for effective communication and successfulcooperation.
BE. as a family of ESP, experienced different stages in theory and practicewith the expansion of BE teaching and social needs for BE knowledge. Mark .Ellis & Christine Johnson; in the book of Teaching Business English, pointed outthat BE development together with BE teaching can be divided into the followingfour phases according to different focuses in business courses and differentteaching approaches (Ellis & Johnson, 2017:3-7).The first period, from late 1960s to early 1970s, is marked by specialistvocabulary. In this period, specialist vocabulary was regarded as the major featureof BE, which can distinguish BE from GE. Most of textbooks at that time reflectedthis characteristic of BE, that is, business-related vocabularies and businessterminologies. British Banking by J. Firth which was published in 1971 is one ofthe most typical textbooks that can represent scholars' understating of BE andsituations of BE teaching in this phase. It is undoubted that specialist vocabulary isan essential part of BE; nevertheless, it is by no means the whole picture of it.Vocabulary is merely one component of language, even if it is the very foundationof one language. Other components including situational context, communicationskills and global culture should be considered as wdl when communicating withothers in the language of English or other foreign languages.
The second phase named by Ellis & Johnson is structural/audio lingualapproach, which is mainly from early 1970s to mid-1970s. Structural/audio-lingualapproach was marked by business-related videos from Britis
