With great importance, business letters have arousedgreat attention of researchers, and lots of linguistic theories have been applied intothe writing of these letters. With the publication of cohesion in English, cohesion hasbeen applied into various fields, which also sheds some light on the writing ofbusiness letters. In this chapter, it begins with the background of the study, thenstates the significance of the research, and finally presents the structure of the thesis.
1.1 Research Background
As is known to all, business letters play an irreplaceable role in internationalbusiness economy and trade. They account for almost 90 percent of all written letters(Lindsell-Roberts, 1995), thus, they serve as a fundamental linkage for companies tokeep in touch with their customers in various areas. Without business letters, manybusiness activities between companies will be impossible. Moreover, since Englishserves as an international use language, the importance of business English letterscannot be overlooked.

Without systematic and effective instruction, Chinesestudents of English find it rather hard to construct an organized and coherent writtentext in English (Yang Yuchen & Wen Zhaoyun, 1994). Coherence constitutes an important part in determining thewriting quality of an essay, and incoherence in part lies in the poor or inadequate useof cohesive devices.
Cohesion is conceptualized as a semantic concept, concerning the relations ofmeaning that exist within a text (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). Cohesion and cohesivedevices take an important effect in predisposing a reader to find a text coherent(Hoey, 2017). Without cohesion, coherence in a text is hard to achieve.
