Abstract
Language is a social phenomenon, and each language reflects one culture. English idioms exist as a special form of language, reflecting some cultural background knowledge, such as history, geographical environment, religions, customs, nationality, psychology, thought pattern, and so on. When we learn English idioms, we attach importance to learn cultural background. Don’t learn idioms from one aspect. If you don’t know cultural background, you can’t understand English idioms. Learning idioms can help Chinese students to master them. However, Britain and America have a long history, and the implication of cultural background knowledge. So, this brings inconvenience in learning English idioms. Considering this phenomenon, the paper is going to explain the relationship between cultural background and the origin of English idioms.
