However, although it seems that the colonization of Hong Kong has brought drastic benefits to the area, including advanced technology and scientific knowledge, forward minded values and ideologies and the most advanced administrative system and education, many historian are still aware of the danger that western powers’ colonization can do to Hong Kong.
First, recently, citizens in Hong Kong have been protesting against the central government in mainland China. Even those teenagers in Hong Kong who are not enough educated to realize what the problem is are also badmouthing the central government in mainland Chinese, calling it a ruthless ruler. Obvious, western powers and western media do not only bring Hong Kong to the international stage to embrace various culture, at the same time, the western media and the western power have been instilling the negative image that they created into the mind of Hong Kong people. Gradually, citizens in Hong Kong believe that only the western value is correct and the traditional Chinese values are not only out of date but also morally wrong.
It is true that the Great Britain’s domination has brought great opportunities for people in Hong Kong to develop economy and politics, many Chinese historians have raised questions about whether the Hong Kong area is still a part of China. Certainly, politically speaking, it is a part of China. However, the constant riots in Hong Kong have proven that its people are more of the believers of western culture and the majority of them are more willing to admit that they are the British rather than Chinese. Therefore, it is worth considering that whether the colonization has brought actual benefits to Hong Kong society of whether it has caused its people to turn away from the cultural root that they belong to.
