Human society had achieved great progress in the 20th century in areas like economy, technology and environment. Every country is experiencing the process of transforming from mainly industrial leading to mainly service industry leading. Currently, value of global modern service industry occupies over 60% of total yield value. (Shumei Wang & Huiyuan Mao, 2017). Service industry has played its key role in influencing the economy through providing people with better welfare, benefitting companies and warning us to pay attention to keep a balanced proportion of all types of industries.
Firstly, with the development of service industry, people begin to be able to enjoy the modern high welfare. Having a mature service industry backing up, people can develop healthy and scientific living habits much more easily and conveniently than before. “In urban geography, investigation of the commercial and information ties between offices in large cities has been complemented by analysis of the participation of offices, and the service sector more generally, in international networks of communications and trades.”(Marshall, J Neil, 1996). It’s obvious that you don’t need to carry a big bottle filled with water while jogging since there are convenience stores every block in the city, also you don’t need to put all things would be used such as soap, television and clothes for all seasons into the suit case because Walmart has already established his footholds in all major cities around the world and the hotel can meet all daily demands from breakfasts to the internet nowadays. In that case people would be glader to do sports, to travel, basically to enjoy their lives. When people started to taking care of their mental health and pay attention on their leisure life instead of focusing only on making money, all their actions lead to consumption and that would promote the development of social economy. That’s how the micro service industry drive economic growth.
Secondly the development of the services industry makes the existence of companies established for enterprises services possible. With such companies existing, major companies can outsource their trivial parts of work like canteen and security to them simply with reasonable price instead of a single department responsible for it. This helps enterprises concentrate their manpower, material and financial resources in their professional field. With full power invested into specific areas, it is easy and possible for enterprises to improve their competitiveness and the quality of products. This promotes the growth of economy as well. According to Adam Smith, the social decision of labor is an important prerequisite for social progress. The booming of the business service industry is actually a macro form of labor distribution, so it will drive the economy growth through reducing the cost generally. We have tons of examples of this kind around us. As far as I’m concerned the Pentagon outsources its security work to social companies. Even such a highly strict important military target can trust social institutions, universities in China should be able to do the same thing.
With all the gains above, we still have to notice there are certain disadvantages emerging with the boom of service industry. Both the primary and secondary industry are heavily squeezed and this will certainly bring structural imbalance and disorder to a country whose industry and agriculture are not mature yet. Premature industrial upgrading is absolutely deleterious to the healthy development of the economy. A country should formulate its own policy base on fundamental national conditions instead of blindly follow the trend of the world. In such a world of economic globalization, any tiny single mistaken step is fatal to a developing country. How are we supposed to prune it correctly? “Adhere to the Service Concept of “People- Oriented”, Improving the Quality of Commercial Services”(Liu Yanyan, 2017) gives the answer.
That’s how service industry influences the economy.Service industry has influenced economy and has transformed the industrial structure from “industrial-based economy" to "service-based economy" (Shumei Wang & Huiyuan Mao, 2017). In the 21st century, services industry has not only become the leading and major industry of developed countries, but increasing its proportion in those developing countries as well. With the development of service industry, the whole world is experiencing an economy growth as people and companies have gained joint benefits from it. The service industry is a potent booster, and it is our job to use it in the right way.
