The study describes the current situation of the “Shudu”family which refers family that have one child according to the one-child policy since 80s and accidentally lose the only one-child. Their current situations are analyzed in details. And the suggestions about the exact social policies to protect the “Shudu”family also are given. The the Central Committee of the Communist Party advocated each couple have only one child, "one-child policy" began to spread across the whole country, including the rural areas and the cities since 1980. From then, millions of one-child families is produced and become very common. However, unexpected loss of the only child caused huge damage to the family who responded to the "one-child policy" positively. They contribute to decreasing the population pressure, to making a good population environment, but their situations are hard to continue their life. The problem has been noticed and relative policies are taken in recent years, however, the response are wake and the “Shudu”family don’t acquire the help they deserved. Thus the author proposed that more focus should be given to those families, especially the government should strength the policies implementation to make sure better life quality of the “Shudu”family.
Firstly, the author analyze the difficulty of the “Shudu”family that is facing from 4 aspects including economic, pension and medical difficulties, the rebirth and adoption difficulties, the fight against spirit and difficulties to maintain families. Reasonable explanations according to the Chinese tradition and current situation is given to express the difficulties. Aiming the exact number of “Shudu”family, the author give four scholar’s calculation based on different algorithms of the size of the “Shudu”family. They also give a rough estimation about the size by using math calculation according to sixth census data of China and compare the family support between rural areas and cities by drawing graph to explain the gap between those two families about “Shudu”family.
The tables help us have a general estimation about the size of the “Shudu”family and the graph describes as follows” With the growth of age, the proportion of family support is increasing, even more than 70%. Compare picture.1 with picture.2, we can see that people in rural areas are more dependent on family members’ supports than those in urban areas. ” (Meng Liu and Mei Zhou, 2017, p. 3). The authors not only give us a general description about the trend of family support, but compares the difference and explain the reasons. The estimation of the “Shidu” family shows the big size of the group, which suggests the importance of groups for construction of the harmonious society. The comparation of those two areas suggested to unified the support standard for Shidu” family at the national level (Meng Liu and Mei Zhou, 2017, p. 3) and the focus of the social policies when they are put into practice.
In the discussion part of the article. After the exact and reasonable analysis of bad situations of the “Shudu”family, social policies plays an extremely important role in easing the economic pressure and heal the broken heart families. Some policies which support the family are put into practice and standards are also given. However, as the authors suggest, there are some disadvantage about the social policies, like “The survey found that many “Shidu” family did not know this policy, also not enjoy the subsidies” (Meng Liu and Mei Zhou, 2017, p. 4), the policies just cover a small number of the group while more people are out of the support. At the same time, the law ensurance is not perfect and the spiritual care aiming those families are not enough,
At the end, the author give specific suggestions to solve the problem from 3aspects, government, society and the families themselves. “The government should improve the system of the existing policy, offer the guarantee on the material and the legal system” (Meng Liu and Mei Zhou, 2017, p. 6). Social assistance like setting up psychological counseling agencies maybe a good way to solve the hurt and the “Shidu” families themselves should not live in the shadow of the past and spend the life positively.
Finally, the article make us know and understand a special group who lost their only child to response the one-child policy. I used to have a neighbour who lost their only child, and actually they lead a miserable life and it seems that both the parents is haunted by the accident and I even can not capture a smile on their face and because of the illness, the husband had to work at old age to support the life and to some extent, they could not afford the fee of the illness. Thus I can understand the bad situations of those families as the authors suggest. As for extend of the topic, I think more real investigation should be processed and record those people’s life, I would like to investigate the exact policies and give more specific examples to fulfill my topic ”Documentary on the “Shidu” families”. Moreover, the study give many descriptions about the bad situations and policies, which is not believable because of the lack of examples. It seems that the authors overstate the problems, however because I have the same experience of the situations which makes me believe what the authors are stressing. As I mentioned above, more examples should be given to make the reader convinced.
