The Pop Palace is a 10-acre modern American version of Islamic architectures down the hillside. It is for three separated purposes: resident, entertainment and work in three linked constructions. Outside, the palace is decorated with laps of gardens and delicate observation decks. Inside, the central building consists of a grand central room, bedrooms, family room, multiple bath and restrooms, a office, a personal gym and a small reading room, satisfying the daily need of its residents. The other two buildings are supplementary to fulfill American’s desire of knowledge, art and power, including libraries and offices on one side and gyms and galleries on the other.

The palace is made of marble and steel cable material. Three buildings are quadrangular in plan surrounding a central court in a semi arch, where an infinity pool and a central fountain lie in the façade as the axis. In this way, the palace is organized symmetrically to construct a harmonious beauty in alignment of wonderful garden views. The three buildings are connected through column arcades decorated with art objects by recyclable materials.
In addition, to pay tribute to the grand Alhambra, the interior design of the Pop Palace uses painted tiles as paneling for walls. Yet, to add some modern American features, the formal elements include blank, modern American graffiti and color blockings in repetition in a harmonious proportion to represent American’s pursuit of creativity and freedom. The general principles of design are clarity, pragmatist aesthetics and creativity.
3.Comparison with Versailles and Its Representation
Versailles is of classical architectural style following the pictorial conventions of a larger scale whereas the Pop Palace is a delicate modification of Islamic architecture. The magnificent spectacle of Versailles requires superb construction techniques, in which the decorative programs, including luxury interior paintings are a convincing propaganda of the King’s battle achievements. They both pay attention to symmetry and geometric design in plan. Yet, the Pop Palace is an idealization of a mixture of Islamic art and modern American beliefs of free will and effectiveness. It follows a more creative pattern and focuses on the free expression of lines.
