October Sky is a 1999 American biographical film directed by Joe Johnston. It is based on the true story which told a coal miner's son, Homer Hickam, who was inspired to take up rocketry. The first benefit lies in solving problem without bias or fault in decision. For a team, the core is the cooperation. Why? Just like a saying goes the spectators see the chess game better than the players, the decision maker in the team shoulders the vital responsibility of a team. If the decision or the method used in solving the problem is wrong, the failure will be a hard hit to the team. So in order to avoid such cases, the decision maker or the team leader should listen to his partners’ opinions carefully. The core of the team gives the possibility to the team. All the team members talk with each other and share their thoughts with each other freely. After the heated discussion, the final decision or the method is given on the condition that the majority of the team members agree on. Just like the case in the film October Sky, the protagonist Homer failed to create his first rocket. Why? There were many reasons contributing to it. But the author think the main reason is that Homer created his first rocket on his own without any experience. The lacking in experience did not gave rise to Homer’s attention. He insisted on his feeling and created the first rocket and the result was failure. If he pursued others’ help, he would succeed. After the failure, he found his friends and sought some help from his teachers and he succeeded. From the story in the film, it is easy to find that the teamwork is better than the individual’s. The teamwork consist of Homer and his friends makes Homer succeed after the first failure. So just like the words at the beginning of the paragraph, the first benefit lies in solving problem without bias or fault in decision.
The second benefit lies in complementing each other's advantages in the teamwork. In the daily life, a versatile person is not easy to find. Each individual has his or her advantages. So a team can be composed by different team members with different backgrounds in different fields. Under this situation, the team members can do their best in their areas to finish the work well. This is what the author conveys in this paragraph. Just like the story in the film, Homer and his two partners finished the creation of a series of rockets after the first failure. Homer was not good at math but Roy Lee was. Homer was not at searching information about the rocket, his partner Sherman O'Dell was. In the later creation of the rockets, his two partners exploited the advantages to the full and helped Homer realize his dream. From the film, it is also easy to find the teamwork can complement each member’s advantage. As the member of a team, he or she is willing to make full use of his or her advantage when finishing some unique work. The reason why a team is better than an individual in finishing some work lies in that the team can own some talents in some unique fields and the team leader can make full use of these sources to finish the work in high efficiency. Meanwhile, the teamwork can make each member of the team understand the advantage and disadvantage on themselves. Then they can better define their roles in the team and spare their efforts to do the work well in their areas. So the author thinks that the second benefit of the teamwork is to complement the advantage of each member.
The author’s experience in daily life express benefits of the teamwork. The teamwork is good for the team member’s growth. As a student of the class, the author acts as an active role in different activities. In common sense, the class is as a team. And every student is the member of the team. Whether the team is good or bad depends on the members’ efforts. In my memory, I remembered clearly that our class held a party to welcome the new year’s coming. At that time, the class was built for a half a semester. Everything seemed new to each of us. All of us at that time felt so tight and afraid to hold the party because the relevant leaders of the school would join the party. To be lucky, our monitor held a meeting with us and discussed the matter. He inspired all of us to ease the pressure and not to be afraid of the results. What we should do was to do what we could with our efforts. Based on this thought, many of us began to talk with each other and shared some good opinions with each other. After the heated discussion, the monitor gathered the information about the opinions and all of us took part in the voting of the items in the party. When the items of the party were decided, the thing we needed to do was to prepare for it. Considering the abilities of different individuals, the task was arranged. Some students were good at performance and they shouldered the responsibility of song and dance choreography. Some students were good at organizing the activity and they were arranged to do this part. I was good at creating some paintings. So I was arranged to draw some beautiful pictures and posters for the party. With the efforts of all the students, the party was held successfully. During the teamwork, I learned how to cooperate with others and how to define my role in the team. Besides, I learned how to communicate with others and share my experience with others. The teamwork gave me the chance to improve myself. From the example of my experience, I think the teamwork can complement the advantage of different individuals. The teamwork is good for the solution to the problem.
