Abstract
Parenthesis is an additional ingredient which is independent of the main structure of sentences, and it is widely applied in both Chinese and English. However, the previous researches were restricted to the descriptions of its basic overview, laws of usages, semantic features, and other aspects, and it is seldom deeply analyzed from a comparative angle. Thus, this thesis is going to make a comparative study on Chinese and English parentheses to demonstrate the similarities and differences between the two languages on discourse pragmatic level.
Firstly, this thesis briefly introduces the background, purpose, significance and organization of this thesis. Then, it elaborates the theories and offers the previous studies of parenthesis. Chapter Three makes a comparative study on discourse pragmatic value of Chinese and English parentheses by analyzing the pragmatic functions and rhetorical functions on discourse pragmatic level. The last chapter covers the major findings, limitations of the thesis and suggestions for further research.

插入语是独立于句子主要结构之外的附加成分，其在汉英两种语言中都被广泛使用。前人对它的探讨多局限于对其基本概况，使用规律，表义特点等方面的描述，很少从对比略论角度进行深入研讨。因此，本文旨在通过汉英语言中插入语的对比探讨，英语毕业论文，揭示英汉插入语在篇章语用层面的差异。
本文首先简要介绍了写作背景、写作目的、写作意义以及论文的结构；其次，详细阐述了相关理论，列举了前人的探讨；第三章通过具体略论插入语的语用功能和修辞功能来对比英汉插入语的篇章语用价值；最后一章列举出本探讨主要发现，英语论文，不足之处和今后探讨的建议。

Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background
Nowadays, with the rapid development of linguistics, more and more scholars focus on the research of parenthesis. And the scope of the study on parenthesis has been enlarged from semantics to pragmatics because parenthesis, as a typical grammatical phenomenon in language, is playing a more and more important role in communication.
At the same time, comparative analysis has been introduced into many subjects, such as culture, history, linguistics, and so on. In the scope of linguistics, this method is often employed to compare the languages from different perspectives.
