Abstract

Slang, characterized by lively expressions, has developed from a vulgar language into one of the most frequently used language in American oral English. It is also popular among American college students. And gradually, this most active group in American society speaks slang in its own style now. Based on the film Sydney White this paper will focus on students’ inner circle language—college slang through analyzing its vocabulary, grammar, rhetorical features and restrictive factors and uncovering the reasons leading to the popularity and the restriction of development for college slang. The purpose of this paper is to help English learners to acquire a deeper knowledge of college slang.

1 Introduction
Language itself has grade ranging from slang, jargon, dialect to standard language. It is with no exception to English. People’s working experiences, requirements, interests, status and relations with the society all contribute to the development of English. People who have ever learnt English may be familiar with Standard English but know little about slang especially college slang. Slang is a sort of very informal language. At first, linguists even held negative attitude towards it and thought that only people in the lowest class say it. But with more and more slang appearing in the so-called classical films such as Gone with the Wind, On the Golden Pool, The Lion King and so on, it turns out to be a language phenomenon that has been accepted by the public. At the same time college slang as a kind of slang is developing rapidly. When college students step into campus they will definitely encounter campus jargon—that is college slang.
