Abstract
Varied cultural identities are derived from varied cultural backgrounds and lead to cultural misunderstandings in intercultural communication. In mass communication, cultural misunderstandings are reflected by stereotype, which is shaped by “pseudo-environment” and ethnocentrism. Combing with “agenda-setting” and “gatekeeper”, this paper explores cultural misunderstanding in intercultural communication by comparing China-related news reports between China Daily and The Wall Street Journal. The analysis sources include news report on terrorist attack happened at Kunming Railway Station on 1 March 2017, and the analysis focuses on the (1) content, (2) expressions and punctuation used in reports.
China-related reports almost include every aspect of China, and that reflects Chinese emerging national role. The study also shows that news report in America mainstream media has a certain tendency that causes misunderstanding and misguidance to Chinese national image. This paper tries to find why cultural misunderstanding occurs from historical tradition, religious belief, social ideology and journalism conception in both China and the United States.
China-related news report is a mirror which reflects current problems in our country’s development. We should take an objective and unbiased attitude, and pay more attention to shape our comprehensive national image. Only when we establish a more transparent and open journalistic communication system in a positive way, cultural misunderstanding can be avoid by foreign news media in intercultural communication.
