Abstract
As a leading developed country in the world, the Great Britain has great influence upon the world. Due to its long history, the British culture is influential worldwide. When talking about British culture, nobody can ignore the main elements of British culture: traditional British meal especially breakfast, high tea, gentleness, conservatism and British cottages in the countryside. When it comes to cuisine in Britain, various pies and scones have to be mentioned because they are one of the most traditional dishes in British cuisine. Along with globalization, Britain has absorbed the merits of food from all the other cultures, but traditional British food remains dominant. Besides cuisine, British pub still kept traditional. British pub culture is one of the most special pub cultures in the world. In addition, British are well-known for their conservative personality. They are modest all the time. In the movie The Hobbit, a trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, adapted from J.R.R.Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit, the cultural features above are all well-reflected.
This paper falls into three parts. It firstly gives a brief introduction of the novel and its cultural background. Then, it deals with distinctive features of British culture exemplified by series of scenes in the film The Hobbit. Finally, the paper probes into the two kinds of cultural spirits: conservatism and heroism. Then the origins of these values and the causes are discussed. Hopefully, the findings in the thesis can be of some assistance in understanding British culture.

摘 要
作为一个发达国家的领头者，英国在世界上有着极大的作用力。 而因其历史悠久，英国文化在世界上是很有作用力的。当谈及英国文化，下面这些主要的元素就不得不谈到：传统英国餐饮尤其英式早餐，英语论文，下午茶，绅士风度，保守主义和乡村英式宅院。说到英国饮食，那些各种各样的派，司康饼就不能不说。随着全球化进程的脚步，英国又吸收了其他饮食文化的精髓，但在英国传统英式食物还是占主流。此外，英国酒吧文化依旧保持着传统。另外，英国人因其保守的性格而闻名。他们一直十分谦逊。在彼得杰克孙执导的改编自托尔金小说《霍比特人》的电影中，我们就能看到对英国文化特点很好的反映。
这篇文章分为三个部分。首先它讲简略介绍一下电影情节及设定还有其中的文化背景。然后对电影中的文化现象进行略论对比英国文化。最后文章研讨了其中的俩种精神文化：保守主义和英雄主义。并且关于其文化的根源进行了讨论，对其产生的原因进行了略论。希望本文所讨论的内容能对英国文化的理解带来一些帮助。
