Abstract
Jazz, the music genre that is born and raised in the United States, has had a profound impact on the music industry of America. Jazz music’s nature of creativity and innovation enabled jazz musicians to challenge the already dynamic structure and symbiotic relationship between other genres of music through their use of absurd keys and bold performing styles. This genre has opened the doors for a more accepting and less conservative notion of music. It even changed the way in which musicians interactive with each other on stage.
Jazz has influenced dance and thus created a more liberal atmosphere for what the music industry endorses. Jazz has also allowed African Americans to become more prominent in the music industry. Distinguishing what should be considered to be musical became even more blurred as jazz entered into an era of unmatched creativity. Although jazz is no longer a dominant force in the modern music industry of America, its historical contribution to the music industry shall not be forgotten.
This thesis is divided into 3 parts: the first part introduces jazz and the different phases of its development since its birth; the second part focuses on analyzing how jazz has been influencing the music industry directly and indirectly; the third part demonstrates the current situation of jazz in the music industry of America.
Key words: jazz; America; music industry
