Abstract
English and Chinese bear some differences in terms of phonetics, vocabulary and syntax, which, to a certain extent, has had some influences on English learning. During the process of language acquisition, there exists some unpopular and abnormal utterances such as Chinese - style English, which is obstacle in international communication and has bad effect on communication with English - spoken countries and on foreign propaganda. In order to make some contributions to avoiding the negative influences of our mother tongue and to improve the quality of our foreign language education, the paper concentrates on four problems that have an especially important bearing on the study of Negative Transfer of Chinese in the Acquisition of English: Pronunciation, Lexicon, Grammar and Discourse.
Keywords: Language Transfer, Pronunciation, Lexicon, Grammar, Discourse.
1. Introduction
Language transfer has long been a controversial topic in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and language teaching for many years. (Li 2017) About the Language Transfer, there has been existing a diverse views. Faerch and Kasper hold the point of view that Language Transfer is a linguistic psychological process, in whose process, second language learners stimulate their native knowledge to develop or use their interlanguage. (Faerch and Kasper 1987: 111)The view of Corder of transfer is that it is primarily a communication strategy, which he terms borrowing. He emphasizes that borrowing is “a performance phenomenon, not a learning process, a feature, therefore, of language use and not of language structure”. (Corder 1973) Now, as pointed out by Selinker the consensus view of language transfer is that it is not an “all or nothing” phenomenon. Actually, transfer has been regarded as a very broad concept of cross-linguistic influence not confined within the scope of L1 and L2. (Selinker 1972) Odlin has proposed a working definition of transfer: Transfer is the influence resulting from similarities and differences between the target language and any other language that has been previously (and perhaps imperfectly) acquired. (Odlin 2017) And a distinction was made between positive transfer and negative transfer. While the former would facilitate target language learning, the later would interfere. Negative transfer occurs when speakers and writers transfer items and structures that are not the same in both languages. (Dai 2017)
