Abstract
This paper makes a comparison between the use of Chinese compliment and English compliment, including the aspect of compliment object, compliment form,compliment content and compliment response. Rich cases and materials are chosen in terms of different cultural backgrounds of people in the Chinese-English communication, which are very representative widely covered. Politeness principle,cooperation principle as well as face theory is used to analyze the differences. With these efforts, it is easy for us to find the cultural roots of pragmatic difference and failure of compliment in Chinese-English intercultural communication and some advices can be raised accordingly.

With China’s reform and opening-up and the rapid development of globalization, the Chinese and English intercultural communication becomes much wider and more frequent. In such a communicational progress, the pragmatic issues of compliments have been playing an important role in several centuries. Among these issues, it is the pragmatic difference and pragmatic failure that brings people a lot of troubles, which even cause a much worse consequence in some occasions. This paper wants to help people understand the pragmatic difference correctly by way of analyzing the cultural roots of them from some typical cases, and thus, people can avoid pragmatic failure in Chinese-English intercultural communication effectively. ，英语论文题目 |
