Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research background
Language is regarded as the most significant tool for thought and communication forhuman. With the development of economic globalization, foreign languages, especiallyEnglish plays a more and more crucial role in our daily life.At present, the aim set out in the new English Education Syllabus for Full-time juniorhigh Schools in China is to help students build on what has been achieved in junior highschool English teaching and learning; to consolidate and extend the rudimentary languageknowledge; to develop the four basic skills; to foster the primary communicative efficiencyin both spoken and written mode; to cultivate the ability to study independently, and tobuild up a sound foundation so as to continue the study and use of English. In accordancewith the new junior English curriculum, meaningful interaction is of crucial importance forlanguage learning in the classroom.Therefore, English is an important part in teaching and learning in modern school allthe time. But most of the students think that English classes are boring and dull, and theyare not good at English or even don’t know how to learn English properly and effectively.Besides, English teachers in school may not pay attention to teaching the skills andstrategies in English classes and still use a traditional teaching method, in which teachersexplain new words, useful phrases, long or difficult sentences and important grammars indetail which will make a heavy task to students’ storing of memorizing space and then dosome relevant exercises.

1.2 Purpose and methodology of study
Interactive teaching method originated from the acknowledgment of thecommunicative approach, and characterized for its communicative nature. And the word“interaction” as the key point of the approach means that the mutual communicationhappens between teachers and students, or among students themselves.The aim of this paper is to conduct the interactive teaching method to the Englishclass to balance or solve the problem of the traditional teaching method among the studentsin Panjin junior high school. There are two research questions in this paper:1. Can the interactive teaching method stimulate the students’ learning interest?2. Can the interactive teaching method improve students’ English proficiency?In other words, the paper is to research the application of the interactive teachingmethod and whether the students’ interest and English proficiency can be improved inEnglish as a foreign language.The author chooses two classes. The experimental class is conducted by theinteractive teaching method and the controlled class is taught by the traditional teachingmethod. And the experiment uses questionnaires to know about the current situation ofEnglish learning in junior high school and then compares the two classes to investigate thestudents’ situation, attitude and interest. At the same time, the experiment also uses pre-testand post-test. The former is to prove whether the students have the similar English level intwo classes and the latter is to explain whether the interactive teaching method isappropriate for the students in the experimental class. The author tries to find out anappropriate teaching method which can help students to enhance their English learninginterest, motivation and improve their English proficiency.
