Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background
It is known that the new curriculum standard has set a fair standard to the writing ability ofmiddle school students. The writing skill training is always an important part in every Englishteacher’s class. However, the result is very disappointing. Many students cannot write fluentlyafter a period of English study, and they even can not write down a complete sentence, not tomention the improvement of ability. Many students are afraid of writing and then they give upwriting. While scoring the mid-term or final examination papers each time, I a large number ofstudents do not write anything in the writing task. This phenomenon is very common in themiddle schools in suburb area.Several factors led to this phenomenon. From the teaching perspective, currently mostEnglish teachers tend to follow the traditional method in the middle school. They are inclined tofocus on analysis of words, grammar, and the whole class is centered on the teaching of wordsand grammar. So the students seldom get the chance to the language output training. Besides,although the English teachers also conduct writing training in class, they do not have asystematic method to guide students with poor performance. So these students are alwaysfeeling difficult to learn English well, and then they lose interest in it, or even give up the language input study, not to mention the language output in the form of writing. Thus, how toimprove students’ writing ability by changing the teaching method? This is the problem existingin the English teaching of the middle school.
Teachers are responsible to explore a new teaching methodology to help students’ avoid theerrors and improve their writing abilities. It’s very important for them to explore effectiveteaching strategies in English writing teaching.About the strategies of English writing teaching, many teachers have made their ownpractice by combining the theory of writing in the world. But the author’s literature searchreveals that the researches of English writing teaching on basic education stage are relativelyfewer in number than those in university English writing teaching. The teachers who areworking in the field of basic education are lack of more mature writing training mode forwriting teaching even though the terraced-training is practiced by some teachers initially, it hasnot yet formed systematic theory.Basing on the above research background, the writer starts the study by researching andexploring the terraced-training model in writing on the basis of the teaching practices. Theterraced-training provides a new attempt for English writing teaching in junior middle school.The training mode applies writing strategies and writing theories to the teaching practice, and itaims to help the students to establish confidence in English study, grasp a kind of skills , buildthe sense of writing strategies and to build a solid foundation for students' further development.And also it is expected to provide a Reference to other English teachers who are working in thefield of basic education.
