1.1 The Present Situation of English Language Teaching in Chinese Senior High School

To learn a foreign language well means that the learner can understandwhat he or she hears as well as speak, read and write in that language. That is to say theforeign language learner must master the four basic skills of learning a foreign language.In China, English plays a very important role in our Education curriculum fromelementary school to college. Most Chinese students are learning English in differentlevels and forms. However, we cannot say that English education is very successfulalthough our English department and school authorities have put English education inan important place. We can know this from both the teachers and the students. Althoughthere are many methods for English teaching in China, the fact is that most Chineseteachers have been quite used to the traditional ways. They explain the text in a moretraditional grammar translation method, trying to put everything into the students' mindand neglecting the feelings and reactions of their students. 因此,中国学生可能会做的非常好了很多的英语测试,但,当它涉及到与演讲技巧的一些测试,发现学生少精通。因此,在中国,它是学生学习英语十余年,但仍然无法地说了一句流利,自信和适当。无论它是一个常见的情况与否,我们应该认识到,必须加以改进,使英语学习者交际能力的需求,以满足社会需求。As a result,students in Chinamay do very well in a lot of English tests but when it comes to some tests connectingwith speaking skills, students are found to be less proficient. So in China, it is possiblefor students to learn English for more than ten years and yet still cannot be able to sayone sentence fluently, confidently and appropriately. Whether it is a common situationor not,we should realize that the communicative competence of the English learnersmust be improved so as to meet the demand of the social needs.
Thus, many linguists, educational experts and English teachers in China turn to thenew teaching approaches and communicative approach gets its popularity.Communicative approach came into being between 1950s and 1960s and was introduced to China by Mr Hu Wenzhong in late 1970s. Different from other teachingmethods, communicative approach advocates focus on the use of language and real-lifecommunication. It emphasizes that accuracy is as important as fluency in Englishlearning. It centers on communicative activities, student-centered and functions such astalking about anything one wants to talk and expressing one's different ideas toward thesame topic. What's more, it encourages the English learners to use English tocommunicate as much as possible while it encourages teachers to teach all the fourskills right from the beginning of a language course. The final goal of communicativeapproach is to make the students become communicatively competent. Student-centeredclass is generally accepted in English classroom.
