Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study

The notion of chunks was put by Becker in 1975, later many scholars began tostudy it more deeply and systematically, but different scholars had different definitionto name it. Bolinger puts forward that human language is similar to other activities,most of which are depend on the repeated memorize and use, but not depend on theproduction of creativity, neither the grammar rules can combine the single wordstogether temporary. (Bolinger, 1975). Since1980s, with the rapid development of hugeamount of computer corpus, the corpus linguistics began to explore the essence oflanguage from a new view. They had worked out that there exist a large number offixed and semi-fixed phrases in human language, they can be stored and prefabricatedin memory, which can be retrieved as a whole easily and automatically. What’s more,Lewis (1993) published The Lexical Approach brought a new view into SLA. Heclaimed that language was a combination of lexical chunks not single words. So inlanguage teaching teachers started to resort to the cycle of Observe- Hypothesize-Experiment other than utilizing the Presentation- Practice- Production teaching style.
Lexical chunks not only have got pragmatic functions, but also used to organize,construct and signal the discourse. So scholar had suspected the grammar-lexisdichotomy by the 1990s. Nattinger and DeCarrico(1992) declared that the short phrase is more sensible than the single word in the aspect of meaning.The significant role of lexical chunks in SLA has been focused by many scholars(e.g. Yorio,1980; Schmidt, 1983; Chambers, 1998; Wray, 2017; Wood, 2017). Also,Lexical chunks have aroused the interest of domestic researchers. They exploredlexical chunks from different perspectives. Till now, many domestic scholars hadalready testified through experiment that chunks competence has positive effect on thelanguage ability. Recently, there had a lot of studies of lexical chunks in appliedlanguage field, but most of them were focused on the speaking, writing and reading.The study of the positive effect lexical approach plays in enhancing the level ofcollege students’ EFL news listening is relatively few. So the thesis aims to start astudy on news listening.English listening comprehension is an important ability which L2 learners mustacquire.


1.2 Purpose of the study
Based on the past studies on the relationship between lexical chunks and Englishinput/output, the significance for my subject selection is to help the students to helpthe improving the English listening proficiency of English learners. And the listeningteaching based on lexical chunks may facilitate the learners acquire more lexicalchunks to their own linguistic repertoire, which can enhance the ability of listeningdiscourse comprehension.Thus, it’s important to raise learners’ awareness of lexical chunks and study how teachers help English learners to use lexical chunks in almost the sa,英语论文范文
