  1.1 Background of the study探讨背景
  声音,单词和语法是语言的三个基本要素,都需要在语言学习。语法,作为其中之一,是语言系统的脚手架。最终依赖于任何一种语言的语法本身的准确性。因此,尤其重要的是学习的非英语为母语的语法在英语学习的过程中Sounds, words and grammar are the three basic elements of language, which are allneeded in language learning. Grammar, as one of them, is the scaffolding of the languagesystem. The accuracy of any language finally depends on grammar itself. Thus, it is especiallyimportant for the non-English speakers to learn grammar during the process of Englishlearning.Harmer (1990: 158) argues that ‘were it not for grammar, a lot of things cannot beexpressed.’ Stern (1992) also points out that traditional grammar rules and the application ofthem to practicing sentence patterns are all along the unshakable center of the process oflearning languages.Canale & Swain (1980, cited in Xia 2017: 23) argues that ‘without grammar, learners cancommunicate effectively only in a limited number of situations and grammar is now consideredan essential element of language teaching. And it is viewed as one component ofcommunicative competence’. Xia (2017: 23) also said that ‘it is common sense that we cannotconvey meaning without a minimum level of grammaticality of our spoken and writtenexpressions.’ Grammar is necessary for the learners to learn listening, speaking, reading,writing and translation.As for English learners in China,  they spend most of their time learning English in theclassroom, the time of which, however, is very limited and not enough so that they do not havetoo much exposure to English. Meanwhile, English is largely different from Chinese in termsof language structure. Therefore, grammar is of great help for English learners in China.As for English majors, grammar teaching can make their English learning more easilybecause that grammar is about the principles and rules of language use. Thus, when learnersgrasp the grammar, they can use it to analyze the language, summarize the language features,and explore the regular pattern of language structure. Moreover, grammar can make languageuse more accurate. As to English majors in a normal university, most of them may go aboutEnglish teaching in the near future, so it is obviously important for them to learn grammarsystematically and thoroughly and use it fully and smoothly in the practical situations.Celce-Murcia and Larsen Freeman (2017) claim that if the teacher has a good command of thegrammar of the target language, he can well meet students’ learning needs. The more theteacher knows the grammar, the more quickly and effectively he will make the students realizethe way of language use and notice the features of the particular grammatical forms instead ofnoticing the forms by themselves. In that case, it can save time for the students to learn thelanguage. Besides, as teachers, they will have to answer the questions about grammar from thestudents, analyze the reasons of students’ errors, and give the feedback. If the teacher knowshow to use the grammatical knowledge, he will be able to deal with all the above series ofproblems.From the communication to the English sophomores, who came from a certain normaluniversity, I found that there are two main problems: for one thing, the traditional teachin
