Indetail, the main contents of learning a language are to cultivate listening, speaking, readingand writing. Listening comprehension is one of the four language skills in communication.Based on the data from Rivers and TemPerly (1978),among the time an individual is devotedto communication, about 9% of it is writing, 16% is reading, 30% for speaking, and 45% forlistening. The data gives an indication that listening comprehension is one of the mostcontributory factors in daily communication. So is it in_English teaching. College English Curriculum Requirements are carried out to keep pace with the fastdevelopment of higher education in China. Deepening the teaching reform, enhancing theteaching quality, and satisfying the demand of the society in the new era are the major aims ofthe requirement. Also it claims that “College English's goal is to develop students'competence to use English in a comprehensive way,especially in listening and speaking, so asto communicate with high efficiency in their future studies and careers as well as socialinteractions, and meanwhile improve their competence to study independently and improvetheir common sense of culture". According to the above statement, we obviously know thatI English listening is increasing more vital in English learning as a foreign language. A higherrequirement of studying independently is rising.Nevertheless, there is an opposite situation in the students' poor performance in listeningcomprehension. Because of the limited teaching facilities in their high schools, many collegestudents begin with rather poor listening ability. It is commonly thought that Chinese studentsare good at grammar, but they are not adroit at listening competence. So when they arefreshmen in the university, they still keep at an elementary level in listening ability. Somestudents who are adroit at listening even can not distinguish what the speaker says at a normalspeed. From the above description of the current situation, a research about listeningcomprehension is urgently required to help those students out of difficulties..As English comprehension plays an essential part in English listening, how to improvestudents' listening comprehension has been of greater importance for a long time. Manyteachers and linguists have been devoted to researching it. And it is investigated that listenersmust discriminate between sounds, understand vocabulary and grammatical structures,interpret stresses and sounds, retain and interpret these within the immediate as well as thelarger social cultural context of the utterances. In the book Context and Culture in LanguageTeaching, the author stated that our choice of words is constrained by the context in which weuse the language, and foreign language pedagogy should be aware of the need to teachlanguage in context. Mason (1994) made a research and found out that students would rely onprevious background knowledge of the subject matter to help them understand lectures.According to th
