ABSTRACT
Defamiliarization is an artistic idea proposed by the twentieth-century Russian formalists on the basis of poetic language. It is an artistic technique that presents readers familiar things in an unusual or novelty way to increase the time and difficulty of aesthetics, which can improve their perception of the familiar. Since it was formally put forward, this artistic technique has been widely applied in different kinds of literary creation. In recent years, this concept is gradually introduced into the field of translation studies. Defamiliarization in literary translation, as a new issue, has attracted more and more translators to consider about it. However, due to the brief history of study, some concepts of defamiliarization in translation have not been defined explicitly. Therefore, this paper tries to make a study of defamiliarization in literary translation in order to be of some help. The study starts with the theory of defamiliarization itself as introduction to provide basic support for the further study by analyzing its development and the relationship with literariness. Then it states the necessity of applying defamiliarization in translation. With the help of several examples, this study draws a conclusion that the realization of defamiliarization in literary translation can take the original defamiliarization as the main and translators’ self-creation as the auxiliary. This paper provides some opinions and analysis for the study of defamiliarization in literary translation, which is theoretically and practically enhanced.
