Abstract:
With the development of modern society, brand-new expressions which cater for the new social life appear in the process of discovering new things, solving new problems and developing new notions. These neologisms mirror the social background, cultural features and the process of social improvement. Thus, translation of neologisms should keep the original flavor and be widely understood and accepted. This entails higher requirements for translators. Focusing on cultural translation theory, this article sets forth strategies for rendering Chinese neologisms into English and illustrates these strategies by examples, so as to contribute to the study and practice of C-E translation of Chinese neologisms.

1. Introduction
Language is developing and being updated. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, tremendous changes have taken place in social life. These changes are certainly embodied in language, first of all in vocabulary, which make the language fresher and richer. Brand-new words and expressions which cater for the new social life appear in the process of discovering new things, solving new problems and developing new notions. Moreover, with the growing influence of the internet and other new media, a lot of new words appear more frequently in our daily life. According to the statistics, an average of 700 Chinese neologisms emerges annually during the 1980s and 1990s.For instance “多媒体”(Multimedia), “科学发展观” (the scientific concept of development), “微软”(Microsoft) and so on. Recently, Chinese new words come into being one after another and become increasingly popular. In the year of 2017, the Ministry of Education and the State Language Work Committee jointly issued the “Report on Language Situation in China in the Year of 2017”. The report lists 171 Chinese neologisms and gives explanations for them in detail. No doubt that the emergence of these Chinese new words can add vitality and newness to the Chinese language, but in turn, it has brought difficulties to translate them into English. |
