1. Introduction
Huang Youyi, deputy director of CIPG has surveyed that almost all American literature of significance have been translated into Chinese, while for Chinese literature to be translated into foreign, there is a long way to go. One of the major reasons is the great culture difference between China and the west. It makes Chinese - English translation much harder than English-Chinese translation for those without very profound knowledge of western language and culture. Thus, both knowing well of English and Chinese is a critical element in cross cultural translation. Lin Yutang is just this kind of scholar.
Lin, born in 1895 in a missionary family, Longxi County, Fujian Province, had studied in China's best foreign language school, St. John's University, Shanghai. Later in his life, Lin got master’s degree of arts in Harvard University and received Ph.D. in linguistics at University of Leipzig in Germany. Since the year 1936, he has been living in the United States until 1966 when he came back to settle down in Taiwan.
"Setting Foot in both Eastern and Western culture, commenting on articles in the Universe" is a summary of Lin Yutang’s whole life. His literary works “Moment in Peking”, “My Country and My People,” etc. are written in English to describe traditional Chinese culture. And they include many culture loaded words. Thus, the process of writing the works is also a process of translation for culture-loaded words.
