Abstract
Audio-visual products are one of the most characteristic cultural carriers in contemporary era, in which the forms of presentation, artistic language and cultural deposits all reveal the strong features of the time, various thoughts of modern society, and most typical ideologies of different social classes and groups. Ever since the end of the 20th century, with the deepening of economic globalization, the advancement of science and technology and the diversity of contemporary media, with computers and the Internet particularly stressed, a large number of excellent foreign audio-visual products have been imported to China, which has become a common and important way of cross-cultural communication. As one of the primary means of audio-visual translation, subtitle translation has been adopted in a much wider scope owing to its low cost and high efficiency. However, compared with traditional literary translation, due to its popularity and easy access, the quality of subtitle translation needs to be further improved and there has not been a mature and complete theoretical system. Even the status of subtitle translation is still relatively low in the translation industry. Selecting the film subtitle translation as its main object, this thesis aims to explore and analyze some related problems in the process of subtitle translation and tries to put forward some tentative strategies of subtitle translation such as reduction, domestication, retaining the original linguistic and stylistic flavor and addition of non-language information based on Eugene A. Nida’s Theory of Functional Equivalence.

The Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines subtitle as “the words printed over a film in a foreign language to translate what is being said by the actors”. [1] According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, subtitle is “words that translate what is said in a film or movie into a different language and appear on the screen at the bottom and subtitles are also used, especially on television to help deaf people or people who can’t hear well”.
