Abstract:
Despite various viewpoints about the criteria of translation at home and abroad, the criteria of faithfulness are always popularly accepted by most scholars, and are regarded as the first responsibility to a translator. Based on the previous research, this article firstly analyses some reasons affecting the realization of faithfulness from the objective and the subjective. Objective factors primarily include differences in pronunciation and lexis in language system and thinking patterns between Chinese and English. Subjective factors mainly mention the translator for his different personal cultural qualities, understandings of the original work and so on, and the reader for diverse tastes. Then the article explains that: on the one hand, translators can be faithful to meanings expressed in the original text, here; translators should pass on true thoughts and emotions, logic relation and the culture atmosphere; on the other hand, styles, especially figures of speech, used in the original work also should be expressed faithfully. So on many occasions, translators only can try his best to obtain the relative faithfulness to a certain extent but not absolute faithfulness. Only in this way, faithfulness in translation can be further obtained; and the original author’s similar feelings can be conveyed to readers as soon as possible.
