Abstract
Cultural exchange is based on language, and translation is the bridge of intercultural communication. The animal culture plays a unique, dispensable and significant role in intercultural communication. This thesis first states the exchange barriers of Chinese and English animal words in the intercultural communication, and analyses the reasons causing cultural differences between the Chinese and English languages and the communicative conflicts caused by those in detail. Then, this thesis emphasizes the necessity of correct usage of animal-loaded words in the intercultural communication. Furthermore, based on Venuti’s theory of domestication and foreignization, the thesis makes a comparative and contrastive analysis of Chinese and English cultural backgrounds, thinking codes, expressional habits from the perspective of cultural translation, and discusses the translation methods and skills of animal words. In order to make a better understanding, this thesis summarizes the mutual translations of those frequently used animal words, proverbs and idioms in the intercultural communication as well as provides rather standard C-E and E-C translation. Finally, this thesis concludes that communicative failures of animal words actually attribute to the cultural discrepancy in both Chinese and English languages, and emphasizes the great importance role of accurately translating animal words plays in the intercultural communication.

1 Introduction
Language is a part of culture, the carrier of culture, which not only serves as a means to express thoughts and feelings, but as a symbol system to store information. Chinese and English are the languages of a long history, rich cultural heritage and regional diversity; at the same time, both have their own cultural and specific words and phrases. Changing the meaning of the animal words depends on the essence of the culture content of which, in turn, reflects the cultural meaning. People often link their feelings and emotions with different animals according to the characteristics of animals, such as their appearance, habits and characteristics, so those images of animals have endowed special cultural connotations. These connotations of animal words have shown the different mentalities, values and social styles, reflecting the magnificent cultures of countries.
