With the development of globalization, there are a growing number of interactions between countries around the world in this new era. Interpretation, as a medium of communication between various languages in different international situations, has also gained its importance. In view of the above facts, this paper endeavors to analyze the interpretation strategies in political situations with the special reference to the interpretation of the press conference of Barack Obama’s state visit to China.
1.1 Interpretation
Interpretation is a form of translation in which a first and final rendition in another language is produced on the basis of one-time presentation of an utterance in a source language . Interpretation, as a special form of translation, is regarded as a translational activity. Interpretation can be divided into two main categories: simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation. Simultaneous interpretation requires the interpreter to listen to the beginning of the speaker’s utterance and interpret them at the same time when the speaker speaks throughout the whole speech, finishing almost the same time as the original speech; while in consecutive interpretation, the interpreter listens to a part of the speech and then reconstitutes the speech with the help of the notes taken while he or she is listening .
