Abstract
American linguist Franz Boas proposed that there exits a kind of interdependence between language and culture. In other words, language is embedded in culture.  So translation, which is realized through the medium of language, is also influenced by the translator’s cultural background. Taking into account the relationship among culture, language and translation, the author intends to make a comparative study of two translated versions of Steve Jobs. The two versions, one from Chinese Mainland (CM) and the other from Taiwan(TW), differ a lot in translation styles. At present, most of the comparative cultural studies on translation in China focus on the comparisons between the Chinese culture and the Western culture, while relatively few studies have been conducted on Chinese regional cultural factors in relation to translators. This paper, based on selected texts of Steve Jobs, tries to find out the reasons behind these translation differences as well as cross-straits cultural differences which determine translation styles.

The biography of Apple’s iconic figure, Steve Jobs, is now a bestseller in many countries. In China, the Chinese Mainland (CM) translated version and Taiwan (TW) version bear a lot of differences, which have something to do with the two regions’ different cultures. The author of this thesis will make a comparison on the translation of the two Chinese versions of Steve Jobs, while taking into account the relationship between culture and translation. At present, most of the comparative cultural studies on translation in China are focused on the comparisons between the Chinese culture and the Western culture, while relatively few studies have been conducted on regional cultural factors in relation to translators. So, this paper tries to fill in this gap, evaluating the impact of regional cultures on translators.
