Abstract: A Cyber catchword, just as the name implies, is a popular word on the Internet, and it is the conventional expression of the netizen (Internet users). It is emerging in an endless stream and it has greatly enriched the Chinese vocabulary. Cyber catchwords, full of wisdom, are not only humorous but also close to people’s life. The Chinese culture is broad and profound, so it attracts friends around the world to learn Chinese. These innovative catchwords need to be translated into English and shared with foreign friends inevitably. This paper starts from the origin and characteristics of network buzzword, treats current network buzzword as the object of the study, applies Nida’s “functional equivalence” theory, analyzes the catchwords to explore the methods of C-E translation and highlight the real meaning and cultural connotation of cyber catchwords. After studying literal, free translation and other feasible translating methods, the author believes that it is only the equivalence in both meaning and function that the essence of Chinese cyber catchword translation counts on. |
