The Lexical Features of Political Language and Its Translation Strategies
-A Case Study of the Report on the Work of the Government (2017) and Its English Translation
Abstract
In recent years, China’s economic success and increasing international influence have drawn more attention from the world. One of the attentions is to the Chinese government. Foreign media has covered a growing number of China’s major conferences, important policies and significance national projects so that they can understand better of China’s current and future development. Therefore the related translation carries much more weight than before. The Report of the Work of the Government is an official document, which is delivered by the premier during the two sessions to the delegates of National People’s Conference and the members of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Consultative Conference.
In order to strengthen the ability to translate political documents or texts, this paper used the Report on the Work of the Government of 2017 as an example and explored the translation strategies from the lexical perspective. After the study of major established translation strategies and a comparative reading of the Chinese report and its English version, the author found that there are four major lexical features of the report: words with Chinese characteristic, a large number of category words, plenty synonyms and repeated verbs. The corresponding translation strategies include explanation, omission, diversification and blending.
