1 Introduction
Jane Austen is one of the most outstanding women novelists in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. In her whole life, Jane Austen wrote six great novels. Sense and Sensibility was her first novel. A major theme is the importance of environment and upbringing to the development of young people’s character and morality. The plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social status and economic benefits.
Pride and Prejudice is one of her great novels. Set in England in the early 19th century, it tells the story about Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into their neighborhood. The novel focuses on the love story between Elizabeth and Darcy. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Elizabeth and Darcy first met at a ball but they were not satisfied with each other at the first sight. However, as time went by, Mr. Darcy gradually fell in love with Elizabeth. As for Elizabeth, after going to Mr. Darcy’s house where she saw a different side of him, and when she knew Mr. Darcy helped to arrange Lydia and Wickham’s marriage, she overcame her prejudice against Darcy and realized she also fell in love with him. Elizabeth and Darcy finally got married and lived a happy life.
