1 Introduction
Jane Austen is a famous English novelist. Her romantic fictions made her one of the most popular writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. She was born in Hampshire, England in 1775. She always read books in her father’s library and showed a talent for writing at a young age. Jane Austen did not get married all her life because she failed in her puppy love. She wrote six novels during her life. Most of her works center on the lives of young women of the middle class. In particular, her works focus on the marriage and love affairs between ladies and gentlemen. Jane Austen comprehends the hopes and fears of women at that time because they had to rely on marriage and family to provide them with a comfortable life.
Pride and Prejudice is considered as Jane’s most famous and successful novel and it is also one of the greatest fictions written in English. It tells the stories of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and handsome Mr. Bingley and Mr Darcy, who is a friend of Mr. Bingley have moved into their neighborhood. It is a great work not only because of its wonderful plots and its female perspective on problems but also because of its significance in guiding readers to re-think what true love is. Austen portrays several marriages in this novel such as Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage, Jane and Bingley’s marriage, and Charlotte and Collins’s marriage, through those she expresses her personal views on love and marriage and particularly shows her concerns for women’s life and condition in the society.
