Abstract:

Virginia Woolf is one of the greatest British female writers in the twentieth century. She is not only the pioneer of stream-of-consciousness novel, but also a famous feminism literary critic. Her poetic stream-of-consciousness novel Mrs. Dalloway mainly talks about a single day’s life of a middle-class housewife before the party held at the her house in the evening. Through the interweaving of reality and memory, Clarissa, the heroine, experienced a spiritual journey in the process of self-discovery and gradual understanding of the essence of life. Divided into five parts, this paper intends to primarily discuss the awakening of Clarissa’s feminist consciousness. The first part introduces Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway, feminism and this paper. The second part illustrates the development of the awakening of Clarissa’s feminist awareness. It has three steps----budding, oppression and awakening. The third part analyzes the factors contributing to Clarissa’s awakening. The fourth part is concerned with the enlightenment of feminism for modern people. The last part brings the paper to the conclusion that both the internal and external factors have contributed to the awakening of Clarissa’s feminist consciousness and that the readers can experience a journey of self-discovery, self-fulfillment and self-transcendence and get lots of inspirations from her awakening of feminist consciousness.

1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction to Virginia Woolf
Brought up in an upper-middle-class family, Virginia Woolf was blessed with a famous father who was a professor and knew lots of scholars, so she could have more chances to touch and learn new knowledge. Nevertheless, to her pity and anger, she was only allowed to be educated at home while her brothers were sent to colleges, which generated her rebellion against paternity and unfairness. Besides these experiences in her own life, Woolf was also influenced by the feminist consciousness of that time in which various literary movements were prevailing. As a result, she formed her distinct feminism. She was not only concerned with females’ living conditions and status in man-dominated society, but also cared for women’s literary creation.
