Abstract
As one of the greatest works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter has been an enduring masterpiece in the literature history in the one and a half century since it came out in 1850. The novel has a rather unique style which is created by its intangible ideas, its use of a variety of artistic techniques such as symbolism and metaphor. That's also the reason why the Scarlet Letter becomes the reprehensive work of American romanticism and a pioneer of American psychoanalytic novel.
As a controversial production, the critics have analyzed the wok profoundly from many aspects .For example; they interpret from symbolism, which includes discussion of the symbolic meaning of the title and the names in the book. However, as to the study on the tragedy of this novel, the research achievement is rather stuffless. So it's pretty important to find out a suitable way to study the tragedy of The Scarlet Letter.
As is well-known to us all, Hawthorne presents us three tragic protagonists. Now that the book is a tragedy, it's natural that we use tragedy theories to analyze the tragedy of the book. Of all the modern tragedy theories, Schopenhauer's view on tragedy is the most appropriate one to act as guidance. In light of the current research status, I figure out that study of this field is relatively less. Thus, this thesis attempts to use the tragedy theory of Schopenhauer, especially his illustrations of three tragedy types, to discuss the tragic fate of the three main characters in The Scarlet Letter.
The centre of Schopenhauer's view on tragedy is the classification of the tragedy types. Then in my paper, I will focus on the tragic life of the three main characters --Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmedesdale, and Hester Prynne. By analyzing their tragic life to show how the three types of tragedies are integrated with the life of the three people.
