Abstract
James Joyce is one of the greatest Irish novelists of modernism in the 20th century. Dubliners is his early work which reflects the mental conditions of Irishmen in detail. Joyce mercilessly exposes the depressing and paralyzed mental state of Irishmen who are under the supervision of the British government and control of the Catholicism from four aspects: the childhood, adolescence, adulthood and public life. And he sincerely hopes to wake them up and inspire them to walk out of the “paralyzed” abyss. The theme of paralysis in Dubliners is manifested by characters’ recurrent inner thoughts and the experiences in daily life. The analysis of Dubliners are usually from the aspects of feminist, theme, social culture and artistic characteristics. Based on these observations, this dissertation made a tentative attempt to analyze the paralysis and struggle of them in the first three periods and to have a discussion of the similarities and the distinctions for the better understanding of the theme of Dubliners and author’s purposes.
