摘要
“垮掉的一代”出现在美国20世纪50年代，他们不愿意循规蹈矩的生活，想要追求心中所向往的生活，于是踏上一次又一次的旅途，去寻找他们所认为的生活意义。
书中的主人公，英语论文，也就是“垮掉的一代”的代表人物迪安具有鲜明的性格特色，他的生活与当时的美国社会格格不入，他为我们揭示了什么是真正的“垮掉的一代”，以及他作为一个渺小的个体对社会又产生了怎样的作用。此外，作者凯鲁亚克在书中以第一人称的口吻，作为迪安的朋友见证了这一切，他的性格与迪安不同，也是具有探讨意义的。本文将首先从主人公入手，略论人物在社会背景下性格意义，从而了解“垮掉的一代”。

最后，本文的重点在于总结出小说中“垮掉的一代”对美国社会的作用。《在路上》的出版使得大家认识了垮掉的一代“，“垮掉的一代”是美国文学流派中的十分受到关注的一派，它的存在对文化产生了很大的作用，包括文学，音乐等等。毋庸置疑，社会也会受到文化的冲击。同时，更多的人在看到《在路上》后开始自己的“在路上”之旅，甚至模仿着“垮掉的生活”，这对对美国社会也产生了一定的作用。最后，“垮掉的一代”是美国60年代以后出现的“嬉皮士运动”和“新左派运动”的原因之一，这些都是美国历史上重要的一章。

Abstract
The Beat Generation appeared after the World War II, and they were those people who wanted to pursue the real life they wanted, so they set their foot on the road several times.
The main characters are Sal and Dean, and they were on the road for four times. Every time they could enjoy the pleasure from indulging themselves and the strong self-awareness.
From analysis of Dean and Sal, we can generally know what is Beat Generation and what is their life like. Dean was insane in everyone’s eye and was criticized by most of first time readers. However, he stood for the group that who were dissatisfied for the current society and wanted to find the truth of life on the road. Sal’s trips were so awesome so that after the book was published, many young people imitated them to be on the road.
Their four trips were full of speeding driving, sex, drug and jazz music, which were counter-culture and crazy. They were harmless but not a positive example for the young people. However, they never cared about other’s judgment. The only thing they wanted to do was to be on the road, to enjoy the life without bound and constraint.
On the road was so successful and had tremendous influence. It revealed the phenomenon of a dead society to encourage people to change. It started the postmodernism as a subculture and new way to write. Writers can express the most real truth instead of modify them for the literal effect.Furthermore, the Beat Generation as a group of people, some of them set foot on the road to find the truth of life and some of them had negative impact on the society. Lastly, it was the origin and basic of later movement, including the Hippie movement, New Left Movement and Civil Rights Movement, which were the key events in the American history. No matter what, they pushed America to advance to different ways.
