Abstract
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald and it is usually considered his most important masterpiece. Most of the reviews on this masterpiece are focused on its theme, in most cases, the disillusionment of the American Dream. Few reviews or comments reveals the reserved hope that is subtly and tactfully expressed in this great work, which would be of great help for readers to better realize the inwardness and the life posture that the author wants to convey by this work. This thesis aims to illustrate what kind of hope for the American Dream is expressed and how it is expressed in this great work through the analysis of the shaping of some key characters. This thesis lays its emphasis on revealing Gatsby’s proud, lonesome and powerless defiance against the reality, a kind of life attitude or life posture that the author Fitzgerald wants to present, and at the mean time has also discussed the contrast of some characters. In another part of this thesis paper, the American Dream has been reviewed under the perspective of Transcendentalism and the point has been made that the American Dream has already welcome its rebirth in this novel.
