Abstract
The merchant of Venice, one of the important works of Shakespeare, is a great satirical comedy. One of the important literary achievements of the play is shaping a typical image, Sherlock. So analysis of Shylock’s character is becoming the key to study this work. This article attempts to from the objective perspective by exploring the reasons behind his behavior to demonstrate that Shylock is not completely a miserly person, but also a loving father, a loyal Jew and an excellent businessman.

1. Introduction
1.1 The Merchant of Shylock
The merchant of Venice, one of the important works of Shakespeare, is a great satirical comedy. Praising friendship and love is the theme of the script. The script reflects the contradiction between the early capitalist commercial asset class and usurer. And it also portrays the author’s humanism thought for money, law and religious problems. One of the important literary achievements of the play is shaping a typical image, Sherlock. In a lot of literary reviews people think he is a representative of the usury capital, is a clam scrooge.
The rich Venice merchant Antonio borrowed money from the Jewish usurer Shylock in order to help his good friend Bassanio to organize his marriage. Due to Antonio never asked for interest when he loaned money and he often accused of Shylock for usury, so they started a feud. Shylock bearing a grudge decided to grasp the opportunity to revenge when he lent money to Antonio. He claimed that just like Antonio did he asked no interest. But if Antonio didn’t pay the money on due time, Shylock would have the right to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's breast. ,英语论文范文 |
