摘 要

Abstract

William Faulkner was a Nobel Prize-winning novelist, and he enjoyed a worldwide reputation as one of the best story-tellers in America or even in the world. Due to his life experience, he was deeply fond of his hometown, the Southern America. And his southern complex was well reflected in his works. He created various vivid Southern women characters in most of his works. More significantly, those female images showed how Faulkner revealed the profound meaning of his works. And A Rose for Emily was William Faulkner’s most famous short story, which was published in 1930. It was highly praised by critics and readers for its superior writing techniques and rich connotations. The study of A Rose for Emily has mushroomed at home and abroad. An upsurge of scholars and learners were interested in doing researches of it, and they all devoted themselves to different research prospects and gained great achievements. In the story, Faulkner described a Southern noble female’s tragic life to emphasize the miserable fate that Southern women had. As the protagonist of the story, Emily became a hot issue that people discussed heatedly. When talking about her character, a great number of people thought of those comments that she was a weird woman, and she was abnormal. But this essay will find out a more comprehensive Emily by analyzing different elements such as the social background, people around her and the most possible facts which have influenced the cultivation of her character and led to her tragedy.

1 Introduction

William Cuthbert Faulkner was a Nobel Prize-winning novelist, and he enjoyed a worldwide reputation as one of the best story-teller in America or even in the world. His reputation is based on his novels, novellas and short stories. He was also a published poet and an occasional screenwriter. The majority of his works are based in his native state of Mississippi. Faulkner is considered one of the most important writers of Southern literature. His work was published as early as 1919 and was largely published during the 1920s and 1930s, Faulkner was relatively unknown until receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature.
