摘  要

远大前程》是英国19世纪杰出的批判现实主义作家查尔斯•狄更斯的晚年著作,描述了孤儿皮普从一个善良纯真的少年转变成一个自负虚伪的“绅士”,并最终受仁爱的感化而找回自我走向成熟的成长历程。本文旨在对狄更斯《远大前程》中主人公匹普的性格发展及其成长过程中不同人物对其性格形成的作用进行略论。
论文首先概述了狄更斯的生平和社会背景,以及《远大前程》的主要情节;其次着重略论了皮普性格从纯真,英语论文,堕落到赎罪并走向成熟的成长过程;然后略论了小说中其他人物---乔,郝维辛小姐和艾斯黛拉及马格维奇对皮普性格成长的作用。通过本文的探讨,人们也就可以更加容易地揭示一个真理:爱,英语论文网站,忠诚和仁慈的重要价值比财富和社会地位更加的重要。

Abstract

Great Expectations is the late masterpiece of Charles Dickens, one of the greatest English critical realism novelists in the 19th century, which depicts an orphan named Pip, the process of his deterioration from an innocent boy to an arrogant gentleman but finally as a good-natured person. This paper aims to analyze the development process of Pip’s character in Great Expectations, and explore the influences from different characters in the novel, including: Joe, Estella and Magwitch.
The paper first makes a survey on the life of Charles Dickens and the social backgrounds in Victorian era, as well as the main plot of Great Expectations. Then it analyzes the three stages of the growing progress of Pip’s characteristics from innocence, corruption to redemption and finally has become a mature man. Next, it probes into the influences on Pip’s growth of his characters from several major figures in the novel --- Joe, Estella and the mysterious guardian Magwitch. Through the study in this paper, it is much easier for people to get a profound truth that love, loyalty and the importance of the benevolence value is much more essential than wealth and social status.

1 Introduction
Charles Dickens is a well-known English novelist in the nineteenth century. He depicts almost all aspects of social life in Victorian period extensively and intensively. He is often compared to Shakespeare and his works are regarded as the milestones of English literature history. Dickens enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad, and he has been being popular for centuries.
