Abstract
Malamud grew up striving for his success in the unbalanced collision of the contemporary American culture and the traditional Jewish culture. Therefore his emotions for these two cultures are confused and conflicting, which are deeply reflected in his works, in particular in the most autobiographical work, The Assistant. This thesis will try to analyze the suffering theme and the conflicting minds of the main characters on the basis of a full understanding of the source of the author’s ambivalence in two cultures. In the novel, Morris, as a first-generation American Jewish immigrant, tries to seek survival and development in the United States with Jewish culture in his blood.Even a man with such strong attachment to his own traditions holds conflicting feelings in the face of the two cultures. His daughter Helen is also the mirror of the author. Their contradiction reflects the sorrow of all sub-cultures in the mainstream cultures.
