Abstract
William Faulkner is a great American writer in the 20th century. This paper examines the interpersonal relationship in Faulkner's three famous short stories: A Rose for Emily, Barn Burning, and Dry September. The thesis analyses the interpersonal relationship from the aspects of parent-children relation, black-white relation and poor-rich relation, attempting to reveal the separation and alienation between people and the resulting decline of culture in the South.

William Faulkner is one of the most creative and most influential American writers in the 20th century. Deeply influenced by the family traditions and the customs of the South, his work demonstrates a sense of humor which is unique to the people living in the southern part. In many of his well-known novels, the status, relationships, conflicts and other sensitive issues between black and white people are deeply portrayed in his works, and the vivid image of southerners is also dramatically depicted. Faulkner’s stories are full of complex psychological depictions and detailed sentimental descriptions. The unusual complex relationship between characters also reflects his originality. Faulkner is a great writer not only for novel, but also for short story. He is prolific with 19 novels and nearly 100 short stories. This paper discuss three of his famous short stories: A Rose for Emily, Barn Burning, and Dry September. |
