Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
So Mind Mapping is helpfulboth to construct individual’s knowledge network and promote the communication ofknowledge and information among persons. Since Mind Mapping has many advantages, it hasbeen used in various subjects in different period. However, the number of studies on applyingMind Mapping to subject education is not large in China. In terms of the studies specific tousing Mind Mapping in English reading, researchers have given much concern to applying itto college students’ or adults’ English reading course. Yet, there are not many studies on ruraljunior high school English reading course.While to students in rural areas, they won’t study English systematically until theybecome junior high school students. What’s more, during the period of junior high school,image thinking dominates students’ cognition, and it is turning into abstract thinkinggradually. So it is absolutely essential to stimulate students’ interest in English reading andtemper their English reading ability when they start learning English with A B C. However,the teaching of English reading in many remote areas couldn’t always meet this point. Englishreading course is filled with teacher-based analysis and over emphasizes language knowledge.Such teaching method is against fostering students’ reading ability. It not only ignores the truemeaning of reading, but also restrains students’ learning initiative and learning interest. So itis urgent to find a better method to change the current situation of English reading teaching in rural areas. This method should be of use to stimulate students’ zest for reading, and enhancetheir abilities of reading and using language synthetically.Therefore, this research combined Mind Mapping and English reading teaching togethertrying to explore the application of Mind Mapping in rural junior high school English readingcourse.

1.2 Methods of the Research
All of theinformation provided conditions for this research. By interview, the author aimed to know thebasic situation about students, teachers and the usage of Mind Mapping in the rural juniorhigh school. By questionnaire, data about students’ interest and difficulties in English readingcourse, their perception of English and methods used in reading were gathered. According todata of the questionnaire, the author analyzed and drew up research proposal. By action study,the experiment of applying Mind Mapping to English reading course was conducted. Theauthor observed and analyzed the changes that students reflected in English reading courseduring the experimental stage. In light of these changes, the author explored and modified theapplication of Mind Mapping so as to achieve the research purposes. In the end, some data ofthis research would be analyzed by SPSS.
