Chapter One Introduction


1.1 The Background of Research
Since China carried out the reform and opening policy, the scale of English education in China hascontinually grown. However, English education in its current form is failing to meet the needs ofcontemporary social and economic development.Especially, in rural junior middle school, teachers' teaching concepts and ideological understandingcannot keep up with the requirements of the new curriculum reform. And their teaching methods are behindthe times. Classroom teaching ignores humanities education. And students are lack of good reading habits.In a word, the situation of students' reading ability is far from being satisfactory, especially in rural area.On one hand, the teachers may not pay enough attention to training students' reading strategies in theprocess of class teaching. On the other hand, in the whole reading process, students' awareness of learningand applying reading strategies may not be aroused.According to the writer's investigation and observation, the students in Guan Chang No.1 juniormiddle school do not pay adequate attention to using the reading strategies, and few researchers have beenconducted to investigate the effect of reading strategy training on the improvement of reading abilityespecially in junior middle school in rural area. Motivated by the research gap, the writer decided to carryout the reading strategies training so as to improve students' reading ability in Guan Chang No.1 juniormiddle school.

1.2 The Objectives of the Research
The study aims to investigate the current situation of the reading strategies use in Guan Chang No.1junior middle school in Yuan Yang and try to confirm the effectiveness of the application reading strategiestraining to English teaching in junior middle school and recommend appropriate method to improvestudents' reading abilities in order to seek a better way to teach students to read more efficiently. More over,this study aims to find out the teacher's and students' attitude towards the reading strategy training. There are many researchers and English language teachers who had come to realize the importance ofreading strategy training. They also took measures to find an proper method for conducting reading strategytraining. This paper includes five chapters. Chapter one gives a brief instruction to the research backgroundand purpose of the thesis. Chapter two presents literature review. In this part, the previous reading strategieswill be presented. Follow this; we describe the research design in detail in chapter three. Chapter fourfocuses on the result and analysis of the thesis. Chapter five provides the conclusion. In the end, somelimitations of this investigation are discussed and some meaningful suggestions are offered for futureresearch.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Introduction
This chapter includes five parts, including introduction the new curriculum standards in junior middleand reading teaching, the definition of reading strategy, the related theories of reading strategy training, andthe reading strategy research at home and abroad.
