Part One Introduction


In the whole international background, more and more Chinese begin to realize thesignificance of learning English. Experts and English teachers in China also speed up their stepsto carry out and focus on studies in various aspects of language teaching and learning. There is atrend for teachers to enhance students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing andtranslating, and improve their communicative ability. However, in certain aspects, reading abilityshould be regarded as the most important of all the abilities, as it has been proved that althoughthere are strong appeals for the abilities of speaking and listening, reading is the primary skillwhich should be mastered by the students in their future work. Reading can provide importantand efficient linguistic input, and it is the most efficient channel of obtaining the writteninformation, thereby enhancing the learners’ comprehensive linguistic competence, so that theycan use the language effectively in practice.In consideration of this, English Teaching in High Vocational Colleges inclines todistribute more time and efforts to focus on improving students’ abilities of reading. English Teaching in High Vocational Colleges demands students to have four periods of English coursesevery week, and each period occupies forty-five minutes. Reading often occupies at least a halftime, which aims to develop students’ language abilities, especially the practical ability of reading. And more cheeringly, by following the common efforts of students and teachers, inrecent years, English Teaching in High Vocational Colleges has achieved great progresses interms of students’ English proficiency. In spite of the great progresses, there still exist someproblems in reading teaching in High Vocational Colleges, among which more attention focusingon vocabulary and grammar level and a little or even little attention paid to the discourse level oftext is the typical problem. Therefore, the present study sets out one experiment by using MartinCortazzi and Li Xianjin's 5Cs Model to teach High Vocational students' reading. In order to helpthem obtain the textual information from the discourse level, including the micro-structure of thetext, the author' attitudes, the context as well as the culture of the text, even guiding the studentsto comment on the text, thereby stimulating students' interest in English reading, and ultimatelyimproving the students' comprehensive reading competence.
